Cost
How much does tree removal cost in Columbia, SC?
Most single trees cost about $400 to $1,800 to remove in the Columbia area, with a typical job near $1,100 (HomeBlue, 2026). Tall pines over roofs, crane jobs and dead trees cost more. See the tree removal cost guide.
How much does stump grinding cost?
Columbia stump removal averages about $309 per stump, with most jobs between $129 and $586 (HomeAdvisor). Many companies charge $2 to $5 per inch of diameter with a minimum near $100, and extra stumps on the same visit cost much less. See the stump grinding cost guide.
How much does tree trimming cost?
Nationally, most trees cost $430 to $640 to trim in 2026, from $85 to $415 for trees under 30 feet up to $475 to $1,835 for trees over 60 feet (LawnStarter). Big oaks over roofs cost the most. See the tree trimming cost guide.
Why do two tree quotes differ so much?
Usually because they do not include the same work. One may include stump grinding, full haul-off and lowering limbs over the roof; another may leave the stump and the logs. Compare written scopes line by line, not just totals.
Are estimates free?
Yes. Send two or three photos and your ZIP code through the free estimate form for a written price. Trees near houses or wires usually get an on-site look before the final number.
Does a crane make tree removal more expensive?
A crane costs more per hour, but it can turn a two-day climbing job into a few hours. On big or dead trees over houses the total is often similar, and sometimes a crane is the only safe option. See crane tree removal.
Permits and rules
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Columbia, SC?
Usually not on a single-family lot inside the City of Columbia, because the city's tree removal permit excludes single-family residential lots. Commercial and development sites can need a tree survey and approval. See the Columbia tree permit guide.
What are the tree rules in Forest Acres?
Forest Acres requires a permit to remove trees governed by its tree ordinance, even when the owner cuts the tree, and approved removals must be done by a contractor licensed with the City of Forest Acres. See tree service in Forest Acres.
Can I cut trees on my Lake Murray shoreline?
Not on Dominion Energy's land without approval. Dominion Energy owns the land below the 360-foot contour around Lake Murray and manages it under a Shoreline Management Program, so contact Dominion Energy's Lake Management office first.
Who is responsible for trees between the sidewalk and the street?
Trees in the public right-of-way belong to the city or the road owner. In the City of Columbia, contact the Forestry and Beautification division; on state roads, SCDOT. Do not remove or heavily prune a right-of-way tree yourself.
Do I need to call SC811 before stump grinding?
Yes. South Carolina requires notifying SC811 before digging, and stump grinding cuts into the soil. The locate is free; utility owners mark their buried lines. Private lines such as sprinklers are not marked, so point those out.
Does my HOA have to approve tree removal?
Many Midlands HOAs require approval before removing trees, especially in front yards and common areas. HOA covenants are separate from city and county rules. Read yours and get approval in writing before work starts.
Safety and emergencies
What should I do if a tree falls on my house?
Get everyone out of the rooms under the tree, stay clear of any downed wire and call Dominion Energy or your co-op if lines are involved. Call 911 if anyone is hurt or you smell gas. Photograph everything, call your insurer, then arrange emergency removal. See what to do.
Who removes a tree that is on a power line?
The utility or its line-clearance contractor handles the part touching energized lines; only utility-qualified crews may work within 10 feet of them (OSHA). Once the line is safe, a tree crew removes the rest. Call Dominion Energy or your co-op first.
Is a leaning tree dangerous?
A tree that has always leaned can be stable. A new or worsening lean, especially with soil cracking or heaving on the far side, means roots are failing and needs prompt attention. Keep people out of its fall zone.
What is a widowmaker?
A broken limb caught high in a tree after a storm. It can fall without warning, even days later in a light breeze. Keep people away from the area beneath it and have it removed by a crew working from a bucket truck or a secure tie-in.
How do I spot a storm-chaser tree crew?
Be careful with crews that knock on doors after storms, demand cash or full payment up front, will not give a written estimate or certificate of insurance, pressure you to sign today, or offer to handle your insurance claim for you.
Trimming and timing
When is the best time to trim trees in South Carolina?
Late winter, roughly December to early March, while most trees are dormant. Spring-flowering trees are best pruned right after they bloom, and dead or hanging limbs can come out any time. See the pruning calendar.
Is topping a tree bad?
Yes. Topping cuts big limbs back to stubs, which rot and sprout weak, crowded shoots, making the tree more dangerous over time. Crown reduction to a lateral branch, done to the ANSI A300 standard, is the proper way to reduce a tree.
How should crape myrtles be pruned?
In late winter, remove suckers, crossing branches, dead wood and old seed heads within reach. Do not cut them back to the same knobs every year, often called crape murder. If one is too big for its spot, choose a smaller variety.
How often should big oaks be pruned?
Mature oaks near houses usually need deadwooding and roof clearance every three to five years. Young oaks benefit from structural pruning every two to three years so they grow one strong central trunk.
Can trees near power lines be trimmed?
Limbs near the service drop to your house can often be cleared, sometimes after the utility drops the line. Limbs near the main lines along the street are handled by Dominion Energy, your co-op or their contractors.
Stumps
How deep is a stump ground?
Typically 6 to 12 inches below the soil surface, enough for seed or sod. If you plan to plant in the same spot, ask for deeper grinding and for the grindings to be hauled away.
Will a stump grow back after grinding?
Most will not. Sweetgum, Bradford pear, crape myrtle and some oaks can sprout from roots left in the ground. Grinding deeper, grinding main surface roots and cutting sprouts as they appear stops them.
What happens to the stump grindings?
They are usually raked back into the hole as fill, which is cheapest. They can be hauled away and replaced with topsoil for an extra charge, which is better if you want to seed or plant right away.
Insurance and neighbors
Does homeowners insurance pay for tree removal?
Often, when a tree falls on a covered structure because of a covered event such as wind. Policies usually do not pay to remove a healthy standing tree, or a tree that fell without hitting anything, and many limit removal costs per tree.
Who pays if my neighbor's tree falls on my house?
Usually your own insurer, if a storm brought down a healthy tree. If the tree was dead or obviously hazardous and the owner knew or should have known, the owner may be liable. See whose tree is it. This is general information, not legal advice.
Can I trim my neighbor's branches over my yard?
Generally, yes, up to the property line, at your own cost, without going onto their property and without killing or seriously damaging the tree. Talk to your neighbor first.
Midlands trees
Why are my pine trees dying?
Around Columbia, the usual causes are bark beetles (southern pine beetle, Ips engraver beetles and black turpentine beetle), drought stress in sandy soil, lightning and root damage from construction. See pine beetles in Columbia.
Are water oaks dangerous?
Not inherently, but water oaks grow fast and age early, and older ones often carry decay behind healthy-looking leaves. Frequent limb drops, conks at the base or cavities over a house are reasons for an arborist assessment.
Is it illegal to have a Bradford pear in South Carolina?
No. South Carolina banned the sale of Bradford and other Callery pears from October 1, 2024, but owning one is still legal. Clemson runs a bounty that swaps removed trees for free native ones. See the Bradford pear guide.
How can I tell if a tree is dead?
Scratch a twig: green, moist tissue under the bark means alive, dry brown means dead. Also check for brittle twigs, falling bark, mushrooms at the base and no buds in spring. See is my tree dead.
What is the state tree of South Carolina?
The sabal palmetto, or cabbage palmetto, which appears on the state flag. It grows naturally along the coast; around Columbia, the trees homeowners deal with most are loblolly pines, water and willow oaks, sweetgums and crape myrtles.
